“Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope.” – Margaret Thatcher

March is Women’s History Month, beginning in 1981 as a national week long celebration. In 1987 it officially became a month long celebration, dedicated to honoring the generations of women whose commitment to nature and the planet have proved invaluable to society.

Through the years, the celebration has grown to celebrate women across the globe doing their part to make the world a better, safe, place for women everywhere. A month to acknowledge the accomplishments we’ve achieved throughout the years while also empowering and encouraging continued growth and achievement.

Tina Tangalakis, founder of Della, is someone to be celebrated for her contributions  to empowering women. Splitting her time between Los Angeles and Hohoe, Ghana, Tina creates unique, handmade clothing and accessories while providing a stable income to the community there. And the beautiful fabrics and textile designs? All are sourced in the Volta Region of Ghana and hand dyed by the women of Della.

Through Della, Tina does so much more than simply providing jobs and steady pay for the women of Hohoe. The team of 55 employees (35 full time, 25 part time) have access to Della’s all encompassing Employee Programs. The programs offered to Della employees include literacy education, money management, financial planning, and leadership development skills.

Literacy programs are a top priority, with Della working to ensure all currently employees reach a minimum proficiency equal to an 8th grade student here in the US. In the not too distant future, Della plans to implement a junior high level certification program and eventually add a high school certification program as well.

The women of Della also have the opportunity to enroll in a Della Saving Account, meant to help them build a long term savings account to be used for major purchases, like a house. For everyone who elects to open a Della Saving Account, Della contributes 10% interest for every deposit.

What I love most about Della is their mission, a mission I believe should be at the center of any business. Tina created Della with a clear vision, one she lives out every day, “we are not a charity. We are a business done – and doing – ‘right.’” This month I celebrate all the women who do things “right” and are changing the world one good deed at a time.

Connect with Della and keep up with all the work they are doing in Ghana via FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.
